RUNE Surges 15% as THORChain Restarts Swaps After Major Halt

THORChain has resumed cross-chain trading on most supported networks after a technical issue forced the protocol to suspend several services. Meanwhile, its native cryptocurrency, RUNE, has surged approximately 15% over the past 24 hours.

The recovery follows a weekend disruption linked to an Ethereum blockchain reorganization. Although most trading services are operational again, three networks remain affected.

According to CoinMarketCap, RUNE was trading near $0.64 on Wednesday, recording a daily gain of roughly 15%.

THORChain Restores Trading Across 10 Networks

THORChain’s official network status page indicates that trading and transaction signing have returned to normal on 10 of its 13 listed external networks.

The restored networks include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, Litecoin, Tron and Zcash.

Additionally, Avalanche, Base and XRP had already remained operational when the initial trading suspension was reported on Monday.

However, BNB Smart Chain, Cosmos Hub and Solana continue to display warnings for trading and transaction signing. As a result, users of these networks may still experience disruptions.

The partial recovery represents an important step toward restoring THORChain’s cross-chain liquidity and trading services.

Ethereum Blockchain Reorganization Triggers Refund Bug

The technical problems began on Saturday following a one-block reorganization of the Ethereum blockchain.

According to THORChain, the reorganization removed a 10 ETH deposit that the protocol had already credited to a transaction.

When the corresponding swap failed to satisfy its specified price limit, the system initiated a refund. However, the protocol processed the payment even though its vault had never received the original funds.

Furthermore, the sender’s actual deposit was also returned, creating an additional payout of 10 ETH.

The unexpected refund exposed a vulnerability in THORChain’s transaction handling mechanism, prompting an automatic trading suspension.

Following the incident, node operators temporarily disabled trading across several networks while developers investigated the problem.

Trading Suspension Disrupts Suspected Crypto Laundering

The network shutdown also had unexpected consequences for illicit cryptocurrency transactions.

According to blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, the disruption temporarily interfered with efforts to transfer cryptocurrency stolen during the reported $6.3 billion Binance hack.

The company indicated that the trading suspension had unintentionally delayed attempts by North Korean hackers to launder the stolen assets.

Consequently, the technical incident affected not only legitimate cross-chain transactions but also potentially restricted the movement of illicit funds.

RUNE Price Rallies as THORChain Services Recover

The restoration of most trading functions coincided with a sharp increase in RUNE’s market value.

The token’s approximately 15% daily rally highlights renewed market interest as THORChain works to restore its network operations.

Nevertheless, the continued restrictions on BNB Smart Chain, Cosmos Hub and Solana indicate that the recovery remains incomplete.

For now, the protocol has reopened several important cross-chain trading routes. However, a full return to normal operations will depend on resolving the remaining technical issues.
