China’s industrial profits recorded strong growth in September 2026, supported by rising demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. However, consumer-focused industries continued to struggle as weak domestic spending weighed on business earnings.
According to data released Tuesday by China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), industrial profits increased 14.4% year over year in September, marking their fastest growth since June.
AI Demand Supports China’s Industrial Profit Growth
The latest figures highlight the growing importance of artificial intelligence and advanced technology in China’s industrial sector.
While AI-related businesses benefited from stronger demand, industries dependent on consumer spending faced persistent challenges.
This uneven performance reflects the broader difficulties facing China’s economy, where technological expansion continues to outpace growth in traditional consumer-oriented sectors.
Industrial Profits Rise 15.5% in the First Nine Months
For the January–September 2026 period, profits at China’s major industrial enterprises climbed 15.5% compared with the previous year.
Nevertheless, this represented a slight slowdown from the 15.7% increase reported during the January–August period.
Despite the modest decline in cumulative growth, industrial earnings maintained their double-digit expansion throughout much of 2026.
China’s Industrial Sector Extends Its Recovery
The latest results continue a broader improvement in China’s industrial profitability.
Industrial earnings returned to modest growth in 2025 following three consecutive years of contraction. Profit growth subsequently accelerated into double-digit territory during 2026.
However, the contrast between booming AI-related industries and weaker consumer-driven businesses suggests that China’s industrial recovery remains uneven.
