Gold Price Hovers Near 3-Month Low as Fed Decision Looms

Gold prices stabilized during Asian trading on Monday after suffering significant losses the previous week, as investors assessed rising energy costs and their potential impact on inflation and interest rates.

Spot gold gained 0.2% to $4,005.41 per ounce as of 06:28 GMT. Meanwhile, US gold futures advanced 0.3% to $4,017.45 per ounce.

The modest recovery followed a difficult week for precious metals. Gold dropped 4.1% last week and briefly slipped below the psychologically important $4,000 level on Friday for the first time since mid-July.

Investors are now turning their attention to the Federal Reserve’s upcoming monetary policy meeting, which could provide important signals about the direction of interest rates.

Gold Prices Struggle as Rising Oil Costs Fuel Inflation Concerns

Gold’s recent weakness has been closely linked to the sharp increase in global oil prices amid continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Brent crude surged 6.2% last week, reaching its highest weekly closing level since mid-2022.

However, oil prices retreated on Monday as diplomatic efforts aimed at easing regional tensions offered some relief to financial markets.

Despite the decline, elevated energy costs remain a major concern for investors.

Higher oil prices can increase transportation, manufacturing, and household expenses. These pressures could keep inflation elevated and complicate central banks’ efforts to stabilize consumer prices.

Although gold is traditionally considered a hedge against inflation and geopolitical uncertainty, higher interest rates can reduce its attractiveness.

Unlike bonds and other interest-bearing investments, gold does not generate regular income. Consequently, investors may favor assets offering higher yields when borrowing costs remain elevated.

Federal Reserve Interest Rate Decision in Focus

The Federal Reserve is scheduled to hold its next monetary policy meeting on October 27–28, with markets widely expecting interest rates to remain unchanged.

However, attention is increasingly shifting toward the central bank’s policy outlook for December.

According to CME FedWatch data cited in the report, traders were pricing in approximately a 78% probability of an interest rate hike in December.

These expectations reflect persistent concerns about US inflation, particularly following stronger-than-anticipated consumer and producer price data.

Recent inflation figures suggest that price pressures remain difficult to contain, even as the American economy continues to demonstrate resilience.

A hawkish Federal Reserve could maintain pressure on gold prices by keeping Treasury yields elevated and supporting demand for the US dollar.

Conversely, signs of a less restrictive monetary policy outlook could improve sentiment toward precious metals.

US Inflation Data Could Influence Gold’s Next Move

In addition to the Federal Reserve meeting, investors are preparing for the release of the US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index on October 29.

The PCE index is the Fed’s preferred inflation indicator and provides valuable insight into underlying consumer price trends.

A stronger-than-expected reading could reinforce expectations that US interest rates will remain elevated or increase further.

Meanwhile, softer inflation data could reduce concerns about additional monetary tightening.

The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield remained close to 5%, creating additional pressure on non-yielding assets such as gold.

Nevertheless, ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict continues to support some safe-haven demand.

These competing influences have left the precious metal sensitive to economic data, interest rate expectations, and geopolitical developments.

Silver and Platinum Prices Show Mixed Performance

Other precious metals recorded relatively modest movements during Monday’s trading session.

Silver prices remained largely unchanged at $53.95 per ounce, reflecting the cautious mood across commodity markets.

Platinum, meanwhile, declined 0.6% to $1,543.71 per ounce.

Industrial metals also faced selling pressure, with copper futures weakening across major exchanges.

Benchmark copper futures on the London Metal Exchange fell 0.4% to $14,277.33 per metric ton.

Similarly, US copper futures slipped 0.2% to $6.49 per pound.

The mixed performance reflects uncertainty surrounding global economic conditions and the outlook for monetary policy.

Gold Price Outlook: What Investors Should Watch Next

Gold’s near-term direction is likely to remain closely tied to the Federal Reserve’s policy signals and upcoming US inflation data.

Investors will also monitor oil prices and developments in the Middle East for signs of further economic disruption.

If energy prices remain elevated and inflation proves persistent, expectations of additional interest rate increases could continue weighing on bullion.

However, renewed geopolitical uncertainty or declining Treasury yields could help support safe-haven demand.

With gold trading near the psychologically significant $4,000 level following last week’s sharp decline, the upcoming Fed decision could become an important catalyst for the precious metals market.
