The latest crypto news today highlights major developments involving China’s blockchain ambitions, Ethereum’s upcoming network upgrade, and increasing competition among Bitcoin miners.

China has unveiled plans to substantially complete its national blockchain infrastructure by 2030. Meanwhile, Ethereum developers have postponed the Glamsterdam upgrade on the Hoodi testnet following security concerns.

Elsewhere, Bitcoin’s network hashrate has reached a seven-month high, despite major cryptocurrency mining companies shifting resources toward artificial intelligence infrastructure.

These developments highlight the evolving relationship between blockchain technology, cryptocurrency mining, network security, and global digital infrastructure.

China Plans to Complete National Blockchain Network by 2030

China has established a 2030 target for the substantial completion of its national blockchain network, reinforcing the country’s commitment to developing advanced digital infrastructure.

The objective was outlined in the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Informatization, published Friday by the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission.

The strategy identifies blockchain technology as an important component of China’s broader digital transformation.

Under the plan, authorities aim to expand blockchain applications across several major economic sectors.

In the Yangtze River Delta, officials intend to promote greater blockchain adoption in financial services and international trade.

Meanwhile, the Chengdu–Chongqing region in southwestern China will focus on implementing blockchain solutions across manufacturing and agriculture.

The government also plans to strengthen blockchain technical standards and encourage wider adoption in data exchange and commercial transactions.

China’s national blockchain project was previously included in the country’s development strategy released in March.

Furthermore, a joint policy directive issued by the Communist Party’s central leadership and the State Council on October 9 called for the network’s construction.

Although mainland China continues to restrict cryptocurrency-related business activities, authorities remain supportive of blockchain technology as a strategic national priority.

The latest initiative reinforces Beijing’s ambition to expand its technological capabilities and modernize key industries through decentralized ledger technology.

Ethereum Delays Glamsterdam Testnet Upgrade Over Security Concerns

Ethereum developers have postponed the planned Glamsterdam hard fork on the Hoodi testnet after researchers identified potential security risks involving smart contract execution.

The upgrade was originally scheduled for October 26. However, developers decided to delay its activation while investigating how proposed changes to Ethereum’s gas system could affect existing applications.

According to the Ethereum Foundation, the investigation focuses particularly on Ethereum Improvement Proposal EIP-8037.

Blockchain security firm ChainSecurity previously raised concerns about two proposals, EIP-8037 and EIP-8038, in a report published October 13.

The proposed changes could alter how certain smart contracts process unsuccessful transactions and manage gas consumption.

Researchers warned that these modifications might weaken existing protections against an attack technique known as insufficient gas griefing.

Such attacks involve deliberately limiting the computational resources available to a transaction, potentially causing unexpected contract behavior.

Consequently, Ethereum developers are conducting additional security assessments before proceeding with the Hoodi activation.

The postponement has also created uncertainty surrounding the broader Glamsterdam rollout.

Although developers had been considering an early December mainnet activation, no official date has been confirmed.

The Ethereum Foundation has not announced a replacement schedule for the Hoodi testnet upgrade.

For now, developers remain focused on ensuring compatibility with existing smart contracts and addressing potential security vulnerabilities before further deployment.

Bitcoin Mining Hashrate Hits Seven-Month High Despite AI Shift

Bitcoin mining competition is intensifying as the network’s total computing power reaches its highest level in seven months.

According to BlocksBridge Consulting, Bitcoin’s seven-day average hashrate has climbed above 1 zettahash per second (ZH/s) for the first time since March 3.

This represents approximately 1,000 exahashes per second (EH/s), highlighting the substantial computing resources supporting the Bitcoin network.

Hashrate measures the processing power used to secure Bitcoin and validate transactions.

Higher hashrate generally indicates stronger network security. However, it also reflects increasing competition among mining companies seeking block rewards.

The latest increase is particularly notable because several publicly traded Bitcoin miners have redirected infrastructure investments toward artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

Despite this transition, other mining operators appear to be expanding their activities and replacing some of the computing capacity leaving the network.

Bitcoin Mining Difficulty Rises as Competition Intensifies

Growing network hashrate has also contributed to higher Bitcoin mining difficulty.

On October 16, Bitcoin’s mining difficulty increased 5.92%, making it more challenging for miners to generate new blocks.

BlocksBridge Consulting projected another increase of approximately 5.16% at the next scheduled difficulty adjustment.

If confirmed, the two adjustments would represent a combined increase of around 11.4%.

Higher mining difficulty can put additional pressure on profitability, particularly for operators facing elevated electricity costs or using less efficient equipment.

Meanwhile, publicly traded mining companies have reported a 23% decline in realized hashrate as they increasingly pursue artificial intelligence infrastructure opportunities.

Their AI-related revenue increased 52% quarter over quarter, highlighting the growing importance of alternative computing services.

BlocksBridge estimates that approximately $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin mining equipment has been displaced by the industry’s shift toward AI.

Some of this equipment could eventually be acquired by smaller mining operators with access to lower-cost electricity.

Such developments may allow smaller companies to expand their operations while larger competitors prioritize AI-related investments.

Crypto Market Outlook: Blockchain Growth and Mining Competition in Focus

The latest cryptocurrency developments reveal several important trends shaping the digital asset industry.

China’s national blockchain strategy demonstrates growing government interest in distributed ledger infrastructure, even in jurisdictions where cryptocurrency trading remains heavily restricted.

Meanwhile, Ethereum’s decision to delay the Glamsterdam testnet upgrade highlights the importance of security and compatibility when introducing significant network changes.

Bitcoin’s rising hashrate also suggests that mining competition remains intense despite the industry’s increasing investment in artificial intelligence.

For investors, these developments underline the importance of monitoring blockchain adoption, network upgrades, mining economics, and technological innovation.

As the cryptocurrency industry continues to evolve, Bitcoin mining activity, Ethereum development, and national blockchain initiatives could remain key areas of attention in the months ahead.
