Bitcoin Falls to $78.3K as Iran Tensions and Higher Yields Weigh

Bitcoin fell on Thursday as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, rising Treasury yields and renewed inflation concerns reduced demand for risk-sensitive assets.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency dropped 0.8% to around $78,299 by 01:07 ET, while most major altcoins also traded lower.

Higher oil prices have added to inflation concerns this week. That has increased uncertainty over the outlook for U.S. interest rates and helped push bond yields higher.

Iran Tensions Put Pressure on Bitcoin

The worsening U.S.-Iran conflict remained one of the main drivers of market sentiment.

The two countries experienced some of their most intense fighting since the conflict began in late February.

Iran said it had struck 10 ships in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The United States later said it responded by sinking five Iranian oil tankers.

The escalation pushed energy prices higher and increased concerns about disruption to global oil supplies.

Brent crude remained well above $100 per barrel, keeping inflation risks firmly in focus.

Higher Oil Prices Raise Inflation Concerns

The latest rise in crude oil prices has increased fears that higher energy costs could keep inflation elevated.

Persistent inflation could make it more difficult for the Federal Reserve to adopt a softer monetary policy stance.

If energy prices remain high, policymakers may be forced to keep interest rates elevated for longer or consider additional tightening.

That outlook tends to create pressure on speculative assets such as cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin and other digital assets often benefit from abundant liquidity and lower borrowing costs. Higher interest rates can therefore make traditional yield-bearing investments relatively more attractive.

Treasury Yields Climb to Multi-Year Highs

Rising U.S. Treasury yields created another challenge for crypto markets.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield climbed to its highest level in around three years this week.

The move followed the U.S. Treasury Department’s announcement of a larger buyback program for longer-dated government bonds. However, the plan failed to provide significant relief to the bond market.

Higher yields can reduce investor demand for riskier assets by increasing the returns available from government debt.

This environment has historically been difficult for Bitcoin, particularly during periods when the Federal Reserve is tightening monetary policy.

Bitcoin Remains Sensitive to Fed Expectations

The combination of geopolitical uncertainty, rising energy prices and higher bond yields has made the outlook for Bitcoin more difficult in the short term.

Traders are now watching whether inflation pressures will force the Federal Reserve to maintain a more hawkish stance.

Any further rise in Treasury yields could put additional pressure on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

On the other hand, easing geopolitical tensions or softer inflation data could improve sentiment toward risk assets.

Altcoins Follow Bitcoin Lower

The broader cryptocurrency market also weakened on Thursday.

Ether, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, fell around 0.7% to $2,478.32.

XRP declined 2.7%, while Solana and Cardano each lost more than 2%.

BNB performed even worse, falling approximately 3.9%.

Memecoins also came under pressure. Dogecoin dropped 4.8%, while the TRUMP token declined 9.4%.

The broad decline showed that weakness was not limited to Bitcoin, with investors reducing exposure across much of the crypto market.

LAPTOP Memecoin Crashes After Launch

Elsewhere in the cryptocurrency market, the LAPTOP memecoin suffered an extreme collapse shortly after its launch on Base.

The token lost around 98% of its value within roughly one hour of launching on Wednesday.

It briefly reached an intraday high of $222.75 before rapidly reversing course.

By Thursday, the token was trading well below $1, highlighting the extreme volatility and speculative risks associated with newly launched memecoins.

Crypto Markets Face Multiple Risks

Bitcoin is currently facing pressure from several directions.

The worsening U.S.-Iran conflict has pushed oil prices higher, while renewed inflation fears have supported Treasury yields and expectations for tighter monetary policy.

For crypto investors, the direction of oil prices, U.S. bond yields and Federal Reserve expectations will likely remain important short-term market drivers.

Until those pressures begin to ease, Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market could remain vulnerable to further volatility.
