OpenAI is expanding its cooperation with Samsung Electronics as the ChatGPT developer pushes further into custom chip development and enterprise artificial intelligence.
The partnership is growing across several areas, including semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and the use of ChatGPT within Samsung’s global operations.
OpenAI and Samsung Expand Chip Cooperation
Harrison Kim, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, said the companies have made significant progress in their work on next-generation chips.
Speaking at a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday, Kim said joint research and production efforts with Samsung Electronics had become one of the most advanced areas of cooperation between the two companies.
However, he did not provide additional technical details about the chips under development.
Samsung Electronics said separately that it could not comment on information related to specific customers.
Samsung Becomes Major ChatGPT Enterprise User
The relationship between OpenAI and Samsung goes beyond semiconductor development.
According to Kim, Samsung Electronics represents one of the largest deployments of ChatGPT worldwide.
Employees in South Korea and other markets are reportedly using ChatGPT across several areas of the business. These include research and development, marketing, sales, and other professional tasks.
The growing adoption highlights how generative AI is becoming increasingly integrated into the daily operations of major technology companies.
OpenAI Pushes Deeper Into Custom AI Chips
OpenAI has been increasing its focus on developing its own artificial intelligence hardware.
In June, the company unveiled its first custom AI chip, developed in cooperation with Broadcom.
The chip, known as Jalapeno, was designed by engineers from OpenAI and Broadcom primarily for AI inference.
AI inference refers to the process of using a trained AI model to process information and generate responses. It is a critical part of applications such as ChatGPT.
OpenAI said at the time that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, would manufacture the chips.
Samsung and SK Hynix Support Stargate Infrastructure
OpenAI has also strengthened its relationships with South Korea’s semiconductor industry.
Last year, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix signed letters of intent to supply memory chips for OpenAI’s Stargate data center initiative.
Demand for advanced memory is expected to increase as artificial intelligence models require greater computing power.
Kim said OpenAI expects memory-chip demand to continue growing as AI systems become faster and more complex.
As a result, cooperation with major South Korean semiconductor suppliers remains a priority for OpenAI’s operations in the country.
Samsung Expands Internal Use of Generative AI
Samsung is also broadening access to generative AI tools across its workforce.
The company said in June that employees in its Device eXperience division would be permitted to use several leading AI platforms internally.
These include OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude.
The Device eXperience division oversees major Samsung product categories, including smartphones, televisions, and household appliances.
The decision reflects a wider shift among large companies toward integrating multiple AI platforms into everyday business operations.
ChatGPT Enterprise Adoption Surges in South Korea
OpenAI has also reported rapid growth in the use of ChatGPT Enterprise among South Korean businesses and institutions.
The company said the number of enterprise users had increased roughly 28-fold by the end of August compared with the same period a year earlier.
Businesses are increasingly moving beyond using AI for individual tasks and are instead incorporating the technology across entire organizations.
OpenAI said companies are now deploying AI across departments including finance, legal, marketing, sales, and operations.
However, the company did not disclose the total number of enterprise users.
South Korea Emerges as Major ChatGPT Market
South Korea has become one of OpenAI’s most important international markets.
According to OpenAI, the country had the largest number of paying ChatGPT subscribers outside the United States as of late last year.
Strong demand from both consumers and businesses has made South Korea an important market for the company’s expansion strategy.
The country’s major semiconductor industry also makes it strategically important as OpenAI increases its investment in AI hardware and computing infrastructure.
GPT-6 Astra Could Drive Further AI Adoption
OpenAI expects adoption to increase further following the September 4 launch of GPT-6 Astra.
The company said its latest model delivers improvements in areas including computer use, professional work, scientific research, coding, and cybersecurity.
Improved AI capabilities could encourage more businesses to expand the use of ChatGPT across company-wide workflows.
For Samsung, deeper adoption could strengthen an already significant relationship with OpenAI.
