Zcash extended its powerful rally on Monday, climbing to its highest price since 2016 as investor interest in the privacy-focused cryptocurrency continued to grow.
ZEC has gained around 45% over the past week, while its market capitalization has now moved above $20 billion.
Zcash Price Reaches Highest Level Since 2016
Zcash (ZEC) climbed as high as $1,249.28 before pulling back to around $1,195 on Monday, according to CoinGecko data.
The cryptocurrency has risen approximately 45% over the past seven days. Over the last 30 days, ZEC has gained about 138%.
The latest move represents one of Zcash’s strongest rallies in years and has pushed the token back toward price levels last seen shortly after its launch.
However, ZEC remains below its all-time high.
CoinGecko lists Zcash’s record price at $3,191.93, reached on October 28, 2016. At the time, only a relatively small amount of ZEC was circulating in the market.
Privacy Features Remain Central to Zcash
Zcash is designed to give users greater control over the privacy of their cryptocurrency transactions.
The network allows users to choose between public transactions and so-called shielded transactions.
Shielded transactions use zero-knowledge proof technology to verify payments without publicly revealing important transaction details. These can include the sender, recipient and transaction amount.
This privacy-focused structure continues to distinguish Zcash from many other major cryptocurrencies.
AI Could Increase Demand for Financial Privacy
Grayscale head of research Zach Pandl recently argued that demand for privacy-focused technology could increase as artificial intelligence becomes more advanced.
According to Pandl, AI systems may make it easier to connect publicly available blockchain transactions with the identities of individual users.
As a result, financial privacy could become increasingly important for cryptocurrency users.
Pandl suggested that privacy functionality could eventually become an essential feature for people who place a high value on keeping their financial activity confidential.
Grayscale Zcash ETF Helps Fuel ZEC Rally
Zcash has gained significant momentum since Grayscale converted its existing Zcash Trust into an exchange-traded fund.
The fund began trading on NYSE Arca on August 25 under the ticker ZCSH.
The investment product gives investors exposure to ZEC through traditional brokerage accounts without requiring them to directly purchase or store the cryptocurrency.
The launch has provided another potential route for traditional market participants seeking exposure to Zcash.
Zcash ETF Assets Rise Above $460 Million
Grayscale’s Zcash ETF closed Friday at $83.77 per share, according to information published on the fund’s website.
The product had approximately $463.2 million in assets under management.
Meanwhile, US financial markets remained closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday.
The combination of growing institutional access, renewed interest in financial privacy and strong cryptocurrency market momentum has helped Zcash deliver one of its strongest performances in recent years.
Investors will now be watching whether ZEC can maintain its momentum after reaching its highest price since 2016.
