German Consumer Confidence Weakens Slightly Ahead of August

German consumer sentiment is expected to decline slightly in August as households remain cautious about spending.

Weaker income expectations and continued economic uncertainty are encouraging more consumers to save rather than make major purchases.

Consumer Sentiment Index Falls to -29.6

The German consumer sentiment index dropped to -29.6 points for August, compared with a revised reading of -29.3 points in July.

Economists surveyed by Reuters had expected the index to improve slightly to -28.5 points.

The survey was conducted by the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions, also known as NIM, together with market research company GfK.

Income Expectations Continue to Weaken

Income expectations declined to -14.5 points in July, down from -12.2 points in June.

This marked a sharp deterioration compared with July 2025, when the indicator stood at 15.2 points.

Rolf Buerkl, head of consumer climate at NIM, said weaker income expectations and a renewed increase in saving intentions were keeping households cautious.

Ongoing uncertainty continues to discourage consumers from increasing their spending.

Willingness to Buy Improves Slightly

Consumers became somewhat more willing to make purchases, with the buying indicator rising to -9.9 points from -13.4 points in June.

However, the reading remained low and was slightly weaker than the -9.2 points recorded in July 2025.

The increase helped prevent a steeper decline in the overall consumer climate index.

Nevertheless, economic concerns and uncertainty about household finances continue to limit demand for major purchases.

Saving Intentions Rise Again

The willingness-to-save indicator increased to 17.0 points, up from 13.9 points in June.

The figure was also slightly higher than the 16.4 points reported one year earlier.

The rise suggests that German households are prioritizing financial security over spending as concerns about income and the wider economy remain elevated.

Economic Expectations Show Modest Improvement

Economic expectations improved to -6.3 points in July, compared with -8.7 points in June.

Despite the monthly improvement, the figure remained far below the 10.1 points recorded in July 2025.

The indicator measures how consumers expect Germany’s overall economic situation to develop during the next 12 months.

German Consumption Outlook Remains Weak

The August consumer climate reading remained well below zero, signaling that private consumption is expected to decline compared with the same period a year earlier.

According to GfK, a one-point change in the index corresponds to an estimated 0.1% annual change in private consumption.

The survey was conducted between July 2 and July 13, 2026.

The results show that German households remain concerned about future income, economic conditions and financial stability.

Although willingness to buy improved slightly, elevated saving intentions and weaker income expectations continue to weigh on consumer spending.
