Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest increased its exposure to SpaceX on Wednesday, July 22. The purchases came after SPCX fell 6.7% and closed at $115.26.
The investment firm continued buying despite recent weakness in the asset. At the same time, speculation about a possible Tesla-SpaceX merger gained fresh momentum.
ARK Invest Adds Nearly $14 Million in SpaceX Shares
According to ARK Invest’s trading disclosures, several of its exchange-traded funds purchased additional SpaceX shares.
The ARK Innovation ETF, or ARKK, bought 76,261 shares. Based on Wednesday’s closing price, the transaction was worth approximately $8.79 million.
Meanwhile, the ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF, known as ARKQ, purchased 24,884 shares valued at around $2.87 million.
ARKW added another 10,072 shares worth nearly $1.16 million. In addition, ARKX purchased 10,167 shares valued at approximately $1.17 million.
Combined, the four ARK funds acquired 121,384 SPCX shares. The total investment was estimated at almost $13.99 million.
This latest purchase followed another major SpaceX investment earlier in the week. ARK Invest reportedly added around $20 million to its position during that buying round.
Cathie Wood Remains Bullish on SpaceX
Cathie Wood recently defended ARK Invest’s decision to continue buying SpaceX-related shares. Her comments came despite the recent price decline and concerns about a potential $116 billion share unlock.
During an interview with Mornings with Maria, Wood acknowledged that the asset had fallen from its peak. However, she emphasized that it remained above its initial public offering price.
Wood also described SpaceX as a company with the potential to become one of the most important businesses in global history.
Her optimism is based on more than the company’s launch operations. SpaceX is also developing technologies linked to satellite communications, global internet access and space exploration.
According to Wood, SpaceX could transform the telecommunications industry. Traditional telecom companies often depend on local infrastructure and country-specific networks. However, satellite technology could create a more global and interconnected system.
Wood’s positive outlook comes ahead of SpaceX’s first public earnings call, which is scheduled for August 4, 2026.
Tesla-SpaceX Merger Speculation Intensifies
Speculation about a possible Tesla-SpaceX merger increased after Tesla’s second-quarter earnings call.
Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management previously estimated an 80% chance that the two companies would eventually combine. Following the earnings call, he raised his estimate to 90%.
Munster said he was surprised that Tesla executives discussed the merger question during the call. In his view, the fact that the topic was addressed made a future combination appear more realistic.
Elon Musk also highlighted the growing level of cooperation between Tesla and SpaceX. He noted that the companies already work together across several areas.
Musk specifically mentioned increasing overlap connected to Terafab. However, he avoided confirming that formal merger discussions were taking place.
He explained that any potential combination would need to follow the correct legal and corporate process. Therefore, it would not be appropriate to announce or discuss such a deal during a regular earnings call.
Could Tesla and SpaceX Eventually Combine?
Tesla and SpaceX remain separate companies. However, both businesses share Elon Musk’s leadership and long-term technological vision.
Tesla focuses primarily on electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, robotics and energy systems. SpaceX operates in rocket launches, satellite communications and space technology.
A merger could create a large technology group with interests across transportation, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, energy and space exploration.
Still, no official agreement has been announced. The current 90% estimate reflects Gene Munster’s personal view rather than a confirmed probability.
For now, investors are closely watching ARK Invest’s growing SpaceX position, Musk’s comments and any future signs of deeper cooperation between Tesla and SpaceX.
