Kalshi to Launch Bets on FDA Rulings and Clinical Trials

Prediction market platform Kalshi is expanding into healthcare by introducing contracts tied to clinical trial results and US Food and Drug Administration decisions.

The new offering will allow traders to take positions on specific drug-development outcomes rather than betting on the overall performance of a pharmaceutical company.

Kalshi Partners With AppliedXL

Kalshi is launching the new markets in partnership with AppliedXL, a company that tracks clinical studies and develops forecasts for trial outcomes.

AppliedXL will help define the conditions used to determine whether each contract settles as a successful or unsuccessful outcome.

Pilot Program Focuses on Late-Stage Trials

During the initial pilot program, Kalshi will offer contracts only on late-stage clinical trials.

A market will not be listed until the relevant trial has completed patient enrollment. This restriction is intended to reduce uncertainty surrounding changes to the study population after trading begins.

Contracts Will Use Publicly Available Documents

Each contract will be linked to a clearly identified public record.

These documents may include the registered primary endpoint on ClinicalTrials.gov, an official FDA approval letter, or the published voting record of an FDA advisory committee.

AppliedXL will establish the interpretation criteria before a contract becomes available for trading. The rules will not be adjusted after the trial results or regulatory decision are released.

Traders Can Focus on Individual Drugs

Kalshi said the new markets will allow investors to express a view on a single treatment rather than an entire biotechnology or pharmaceutical business.

This could give traders a more targeted way to assess scientific and regulatory risk without gaining exposure to every product, financial result, or strategic decision associated with the company developing the drug.

FDA Decisions Included at Launch

More than a dozen FDA-related contracts are expected to be available when the service launches.

One market will focus on whether the FDA approves Gilead’s experimental cancer treatment, anito-cel.

Another will cover the potential approval of ivonescimab, an experimental lung cancer drug being developed by Summit Therapeutics.

Alzheimer’s Trial Outcome Also Featured

The platform will also offer a contract linked to an experimental Alzheimer’s disease treatment being developed by AriBio.

Traders will be able to predict whether the drug achieves the main objective of its late-stage clinical trial.

Kalshi Introduces Trading Restrictions

Kalshi will require all participants in these markets to verify their employment.

The platform will also prohibit trading by individuals who possess material nonpublic information related to a drug, clinical trial, company, or regulatory decision.

These safeguards are designed to reduce the risk of insider trading and protect the integrity of the new healthcare prediction markets.
