US Announces 25% Tariff on Selected Brazilian Imports
The United States announced on Wednesday that it will introduce a 25% tariff on selected imports from Brazil.
The decision follows a year-long trade investigation, which concluded that several Brazilian policies unfairly limited US commerce and placed American companies at a disadvantage.
Tariff Action Follows Section 301 Investigation
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said President Donald Trump ordered the measure under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
The provision allows the United States to respond to foreign government practices considered unreasonable, discriminatory, or harmful to American trade.
According to the US Trade Representative, negotiations with Brazil failed to resolve the concerns raised during the investigation.
US Raises Concerns Over Brazilian Trade Policies
The investigation covered several areas of economic and trade policy.
These included digital trade, electronic payment services, preferential tariff arrangements, intellectual property protection, anti-corruption enforcement, and access to Brazil’s ethanol market.
US officials also examined concerns related to illegal deforestation and its possible effect on fair competition.
Washington determined that these policies restricted US companies and justified action under Section 301.
Products Covered by Tariff Not Yet Specified
The new 25% duty will apply to certain Brazilian goods entering the United States.
However, the US Trade Representative did not immediately identify which products would face the additional tariff.
Further details are expected to clarify the affected industries and the potential impact on trade between the two countries.
Washington Says Tariff Will Protect US Businesses
Greer said the measure was necessary to address practices that the United States considers unfair.
He argued that the tariff would help American workers and businesses compete under more equal conditions.
Despite announcing the new trade restriction, Washington indicated that it remains willing to continue negotiations with Brazil.
Investigation Began in July 2025
The United States launched the trade investigation on July 15, 2025, following instructions from President Trump.
US officials held consultations with representatives from Brazil in April. The investigation also included two rounds of public hearings.
In addition, the US Trade Representative received more than 360 written submissions from businesses, organisations, and other interested parties.
After reviewing the evidence, the agency concluded in June that Brazil’s policies could be challenged under Section 301.
What Section 301 Allows the US to Do
Section 301 gives the United States authority to investigate and respond to foreign trade practices that burden or restrict American commerce.
Possible responses can include tariffs or other trade measures designed to pressure the foreign government into changing the disputed policies.
The new tariff may increase trade tensions between the United States and Brazil, particularly if the affected products represent important Brazilian exports.
