Japan stocks ended lower on Wednesday, with the Nikkei 225 falling sharply as weakness in key sectors weighed on the broader market.

Losses in the Paper & Pulp, Transport, and Communication sectors helped push Japanese shares lower by the close of trade in Tokyo.

At the close, the Nikkei 225 was down 1.85%.

Top Performers on the Nikkei 225

Tokyo Electric Power Co. was one of the strongest performers of the session. The stock rose 3.81%, or 17.60 points, to close at 479.90.

Mercari Inc also posted solid gains. Shares climbed 3.39%, or 153.00 points, to finish at 4,665.00.

Inpex Corp gained 3.26%, or 107.00 points, ending the session at 3,388.00.

Mercari Hits a Three-Year High

Mercari shares reached a three-year high during the session.

The stock rose 3.39% to close at 4,665.00, making it one of the standout gainers on the Nikkei 225.

Biggest Decliners in Tokyo

Taiyo Yuden Co. was the worst performer on the Nikkei 225. The stock dropped 8.50%, or 1,390.00 points, to close at 14,965.00.

Hoya Corp also fell sharply, losing 6.77%, or 1,735.00 points, to end at 23,910.00.

Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. declined 6.12%, or 2,200.00 points, finishing the session at 33,730.00.

Market Breadth Remains Negative

Market breadth was negative on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Falling stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2,217 to 1,299, while 226 stocks closed unchanged.

This showed that selling pressure was spread across a wide part of the Japanese stock market.

Nikkei Volatility Falls

The Nikkei Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, dropped 20.50% to 29.70.

The decline suggests that expected market volatility eased, even as Japanese stocks closed lower.

Oil Prices Rise While Gold Falls

In commodities, crude oil prices moved higher.

Crude oil for August delivery rose 3.22%, or $2.27, to trade at $72.71 a barrel.

Brent oil for September delivery climbed 3.26%, or $2.42, to reach $76.58 a barrel.

Meanwhile, August gold futures fell 0.63%, or $26.20, to trade at $4,131.20 per troy ounce.

Yen Weakens Against Major Currencies

In currency markets, USD/JPY rose 0.15% to 162.22.

EUR/JPY also moved higher, gaining 0.16% to trade at 185.29.

The U.S. Dollar Index Futures was little changed, rising 0.01% to 100.79.

Japan Market Outlook

Japanese stocks closed under pressure as sector losses dragged the Nikkei 225 lower.

However, gains in names such as Tokyo Electric Power, Mercari, and Inpex helped limit some of the broader weakness.

Investors will now watch commodity prices, currency movements, and global risk sentiment for the next direction in Japan’s stock market.
