New Chinese AI Model Rivals OpenAI and Anthropic at a Fraction of the Cost

Chinese artificial intelligence models have traditionally competed with U.S. rivals by offering lower prices, although they often lagged behind in performance.

That gap may now be narrowing.

GLM-5.2, a new AI model developed by Beijing-based startup Z.ai, is attracting attention for its coding, reasoning, and autonomous agent capabilities.

GLM-5.2 Challenges OpenAI and Anthropic

Z.ai launched GLM-5.2 last month. Since then, the model has generated growing interest among developers and technology executives in Silicon Valley.

Its performance reportedly approaches that of leading models from OpenAI and Anthropic. However, GLM-5.2 operates at a significantly lower cost.

Some industry experts have described its rapid rise as a “mini DeepSeek moment.”

DeepSeek previously surprised global markets by releasing a powerful AI model at a much lower cost than many Western alternatives.

Chinese AI Model Climbs Developer Rankings

GLM-5.2 has quickly gained users on third-party AI development platforms such as OpenRouter.

The model has reportedly moved above some Anthropic products in the platform’s usage rankings.

Several well-known technology figures have also praised its capabilities. These include Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen.

The growing attention suggests that developers are becoming more willing to consider Chinese AI models as alternatives to leading U.S. systems.

Strong Coding and AI Agent Performance

GLM-5.2 has performed particularly well in coding and agent-based tasks.

AI agents can complete complex processes with limited human guidance. These systems may research information, write code, operate software, or carry out several connected tasks from a single prompt.

David Sacks, a former AI adviser to President Donald Trump, said GLM-5.2 was close to Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 in overall capability.

His comments added to the debate over whether China is closing the gap with the United States in advanced artificial intelligence.

US AI Regulation Raises Industry Concerns

Technology executives have warned that unpredictable U.S. regulation could weaken the country’s position in the global AI race.

Restrictions involving some Anthropic models and delays in the public release of OpenAI’s latest technology reportedly increased international interest in GLM-5.2.

Developers and businesses may view heavy dependence on proprietary U.S. AI platforms as a potential risk.

Brian Tse, founder of Beijing-based AI safety consultancy Concordia AI, said international developers were becoming more aware of the risks associated with relying only on closed U.S. systems.

Lower AI Costs Attract Businesses

The rising cost of artificial intelligence is becoming an important concern for companies.

Advanced AI agents often consume large numbers of tokens, which are the units used to measure and price model usage.

As applications become more complex, monthly AI expenses can rise quickly and remain difficult to predict.

GLM-5.2 may appeal to companies because it reportedly delivers strong performance at around one-sixth of the cost of closed U.S. models such as Claude and GPT.

Z.ai has not disclosed how much it spent to develop the model.

GLM-5.2 Performs Well in AI Benchmarks

GLM-5.2 currently ranks fifth on the Artificial Analysis large language model intelligence leaderboard.

The ranking measures performance across several areas, including reasoning, coding, and general problem-solving ability.

The Chinese model also holds second place in Code Arena’s front-end development rankings. This benchmark measures how effectively AI systems can build websites and other front-end applications.

These results have strengthened claims that GLM-5.2 can compete with some of the most advanced Western AI models.

Open-Source AI Becomes Easier to Use

GLM-5.2 is an open-weight model, meaning developers can access and deploy its underlying parameters more freely than those of closed systems.

Traditionally, open-source AI models required extensive fine-tuning and technical expertise before businesses could use them effectively.

However, experts say GLM-5.2 is closer to a ready-to-use product.

Tiezhen Wang, the former Asia-Pacific lead at Hugging Face, said users could deploy the model without building complicated fine-tuning systems.

This easier setup could lower the barrier to open-source AI adoption.

Z.ai Sets Ambitious AI Targets

Z.ai is also known as Zhipu AI.

Company founder Tang Jie recently said the startup aimed to produce a model comparable to one of Anthropic’s leading systems before the end of the first quarter next year.

The statement highlights the rapid pace of Chinese AI development.

However, Z.ai declined to comment further, while OpenAI and Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Data Security Remains a Major Obstacle

Despite its technical performance and lower price, GLM-5.2 may struggle to gain widespread adoption among large American businesses.

Data security concerns have limited the use of Chinese AI models in the United States.

These concerns are particularly important in regulated industries such as banking, government, healthcare, and cybersecurity.

Large companies may also need several months to migrate and upgrade their existing AI systems.

US and European Companies May Remain Cautious

Some European businesses have reportedly discussed whether GLM-5.2 could be used in enterprise environments.

However, regulatory requirements and customer concerns could prevent wider adoption.

Wei Sun, an AI analyst at Counterpoint Research, said some clients and regulated industries in the United States and European Union may reject Chinese models regardless of their price or performance.

For these organizations, the origin of the technology may remain a decisive factor.

Chinese AI Models Expand Global Market Share

Chinese large language models have already increased their share of the global AI market.

A RAND report based on website traffic across 135 countries found that their market share rose from 3% to 13% during the two months following the launch of DeepSeek’s R1 model.

DeepSeek’s release triggered a global technology selloff because its low development cost challenged assumptions about the need for massive AI infrastructure spending.

Chinese AI adoption grew most strongly in developing countries and in nations with close economic or political relationships with Beijing.

Local Deployment Could Address Security Concerns

Some experts believe concerns surrounding Chinese AI models are overstated.

Companies can run open models on their own servers or through U.S.-based cloud providers. This approach may prevent sensitive information from being transferred to Chinese infrastructure.

Large corporations may still move slowly because of regulatory and technical requirements.

However, startups and small or medium-sized businesses are likely to adopt lower-cost models more quickly.

GLM-5.2 May Complement US AI Models

GLM-5.2 is unlikely to replace OpenAI or Anthropic across the market immediately.

Instead, companies may use several AI models for different tasks.

For example, a business could continue using a leading U.S. model for sensitive work while routing coding or less critical tasks through GLM-5.2 to reduce costs.

Developers often focus more on performance, price, availability, and ease of deployment than on where a model was created.

As a result, GLM-5.2 may become an important alternative within a broader multi-model AI strategy.

A New Phase in the Global AI Race

The rise of GLM-5.2 suggests that Chinese companies are making progress in advanced artificial intelligence.

Its combination of strong coding performance, agent capabilities, open access, and lower pricing could attract developers around the world.

However, security concerns and regulatory barriers may prevent rapid adoption by major American and European companies.

GLM-5.2 may therefore represent a smaller and more developer-focused version of the DeepSeek disruption rather than an immediate replacement for OpenAI or Anthropic.
