German Consumer Sentiment Declines Ahead of April
Consumer confidence in Germany is expected to weaken further heading into April, as rising energy costs linked to geopolitical tensions, including the conflict involving Iran, continue to fuel inflation concerns and weigh on the country’s fragile economic recovery.
GfK Index Falls More Than Expected
According to data released by GfK in collaboration with the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions, the consumer sentiment index dropped by 3.2 points to -28.0 for April.
This decline was sharper than analysts had anticipated, as forecasts compiled by Reuters had projected a smaller fall to -27.0.
Income and Economic Expectations Turn Negative
Households are becoming increasingly pessimistic about their financial outlook. Income expectations fell into negative territory, reflecting growing fears that inflation will erode purchasing power.
At the same time, broader economic expectations declined significantly, reaching their lowest level since December 2022, highlighting concerns over the sustainability of Germany’s recovery.
Energy Prices Drive Consumer Concerns
The survey indicates that many consumers are worried the economic rebound could stall if current geopolitical tensions persist. Rising energy prices remain a key concern, as they directly impact household budgets.
Rolf Buerkl, head of consumer climate at NIM, noted that around 60% of Germans expect oil, gas, and fuel prices to remain elevated over the long term, which continues to pressure consumer sentiment.
Spending and Saving Behavior Remains Stable
Despite the negative outlook, consumer behavior has not yet fully adjusted. The willingness to make major purchases declined only slightly, falling by 1.6 points to -10.9 in March.
Meanwhile, the tendency to save remained elevated, easing just 0.4 points to a still-high level of 18.5, suggesting households remain cautious but not yet drastically changing financial habits.
Key Consumer Indicators Overview
Recent data highlights the overall weakening trend:
- Consumer climate index dropped to -28.0 in April 2026 (from -24.3 in March)
- Economic expectations fell to -6.9 in March 2026
- Income expectations declined to -6.3
- Willingness to buy decreased to -10.9
- Willingness to save remained high at 18.5
The survey was conducted between March 5 and March 16, 2026. A reading above zero indicates year-on-year growth in private consumption, while values below zero signal contraction. Each one-point change corresponds to a 0.1% shift in private consumption on an annual basis.
