German retail sales declined more than expected in January, highlighting ongoing weakness in consumer spending across Europe’s largest economy.
According to official data released on Monday, retail sales fell by 0.9% compared with the previous month. The drop was significantly larger than market expectations.
Economists surveyed by Reuters had forecast a modest 0.2% monthly decline, making the actual contraction a notable downside surprise.
