OpenAI Expands Into AI Hardware With Smart Speaker and Wearable Devices
OpenAI is reportedly developing a range of AI-powered devices, including a smart speaker, smart glasses, and even a smart lamp. According to a report by The Information, more than 200 employees are currently working on the hardware initiative.
The smart speaker is expected to be the first product launched under this new strategy. Sources familiar with the plans suggest it could be priced between $200 and $300. However, the device is unlikely to ship before February 2027.
The speaker is said to include a built-in camera, allowing it to gather contextual information about users and their surroundings. This feature would mark a significant step toward more interactive and personalized AI experiences.
Smart Glasses Targeted for 2028 Launch
In addition to the smart speaker, OpenAI is reportedly working on smart glasses. Mass production of the wearable device may not begin until 2028, according to the report.
OpenAI has not yet commented publicly on these plans.
OpenAI’s $6.5 Billion Bet on AI Hardware
The ChatGPT creator recently strengthened its push into hardware through the $6.5 billion acquisition of io Products, a startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive. The move signals OpenAI’s ambition to expand beyond software and capitalize on rising demand for physical AI devices and augmented reality technology.
The AI hardware market is becoming increasingly competitive. Meta has achieved notable success with its Ray-Ban smart glasses, which allow users to capture photos, record video, and stream content using built-in cameras. Meanwhile, Apple and Google are also reportedly developing their own smart glasses products.
OpenAI’s entry into the AI device market could reshape competition in both artificial intelligence and consumer hardware in the coming years.
