The BBC is preparing to enter a significant content partnership with YouTube, owned by Alphabet Inc., according to a report published on Friday by the Financial Times, citing sources familiar with the talks.

Under the proposed agreement, the British broadcaster would start producing original programming specifically for YouTube audiences. These shows would also be made available across the BBC’s own digital platforms. The deal could be formally announced as early as next week, the report said.

Until now, the BBC has mainly used YouTube as a promotional tool, sharing trailers and short clips to market its content to UK viewers rather than releasing full-length programming.

A partnership with YouTube would signal a strategic shift for the BBC as it looks to strengthen its digital presence and better compete with global streaming services. The rapid rise of platforms such as Netflix and Disney has increasingly drawn audiences away from traditional broadcasters.

According to the Financial Times, the BBC’s planned YouTube-focused content will be aimed primarily at younger viewers, reflecting the broadcaster’s effort to reconnect with audiences who increasingly consume media online.
