Tesla announced on Thursday that it is recalling about 10,500 Powerwall 2 battery systems in the United States due to potential fire and burn hazards. The recall comes after 22 overheating incidents were reported.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the affected units “may fail and overheat,” creating a risk of serious injury or death. While no injuries have been reported, some overheating events have led to property damage.

The Powerwall 2 is a home energy-storage system used alongside solar panels. It stores electricity for household use, supports energy shifting to reduce costs, and provides backup power during outages.

The recall notice explains that the issue is linked to specific lithium-ion battery cells that can overheat under certain conditions. This may lead to smoke or, in rare cases, ignition.

Tesla is taking precautionary steps by remotely reducing the maximum charge level on affected units. The company is also offering free replacements to all impacted customers.
