The European Union is preparing new measures to accelerate the phaseout of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports. The move follows recent pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who urged the bloc to take stronger action against Moscow’s energy trade.

According to Bloomberg, the European Commission is considering adding a provision to its upcoming sanctions package that would end Russian LNG imports before 2027. This would bring the deadline forward from the EU’s original timeline. Sources familiar with the matter, who spoke anonymously, said the proposal could be introduced as early as Friday.

In addition, Brussels is weighing the option of speeding up the phaseout through an amendment to the RePowerEU plan. That initiative was originally designed to reduce and ultimately end Europe’s reliance on Russian energy.

These discussions come at a time when the global LNG market may soon face oversupply, after several years of tight supply conditions.
