Trump Likes TikTok, But App Must Shift to US Ownership, Says Commerce Secretary
U.S. President Donald Trump likes TikTok, but the app must be transferred to American ownership, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. TikTok, owned by a Chinese company, is currently used by around 170 million Americans.
In an interview on Fox News Sunday with Shannon Bream, Lutnick said, “The President really likes TikTok. He has said it many times. It’s a good way to reach young people.”
However, Lutnick stressed the need for national security. “Let’s face it,” he said, “you can’t have a Chinese-owned app on 100 million American phones. That’s not acceptable.”
He added that the platform must use American technology and algorithms. “The President supports TikTok,” Lutnick said, “but only if it moves into U.S. hands.”
