U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to unveil a new initiative on Monday to provide Ukraine with offensive weaponry, signaling a significant policy shift, Axios reported Sunday evening, citing two informed sources.
The decision follows Trump’s growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, particularly after Russia intensified its assault on Kyiv despite earlier peace discussions.
Previously cautious about fueling the conflict, Trump had limited U.S. aid to defensive military support. But ongoing heavy attacks from both Russia and Ukraine—and failed attempts at negotiating a ceasefire—appear to have prompted the policy change.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump confirmed that the U.S. would send “various pieces of sophisticated military equipment” to Ukraine, including Patriot air defense systems.
Trump also expressed disappointment in Putin, accusing him of undermining peace prospects by escalating military action after claiming to seek resolution.
The war, now in its fourth year, continues to show little sign of easing, even as Trump previously promised to bring it to a quick end. Meanwhile, separate reports suggest the U.S. may also be preparing further sanctions against Russia.
