OpenAI is reportedly working on adding productivity tools to ChatGPT, aiming to position itself as a rival to Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, according to The Information.

The company is developing features such as real-time collaborative document editing and built-in chat functionality—signaling a strategic move beyond its chatbot roots. These additions align with CEO Sam Altman’s broader vision of evolving ChatGPT into a comprehensive personal assistant, including in professional settings.

This initiative comes amid delicate negotiations between OpenAI and Microsoft, which owns roughly 49% of the company’s for-profit division. The two firms are currently in discussions to restructure their financial arrangement.

The new tools mirror capabilities found in Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace—leading productivity suites that have already started integrating generative AI features. But OpenAI’s ambitions appear to extend further.

In addition to document tools, OpenAI is reportedly working on a suite of products including a web browser, a hardware device powered by AI, and a content feed within ChatGPT. These developments suggest the company is building a more self-contained ecosystem for content creation and distribution.

If successful, the move could make ChatGPT a more essential tool for businesses, potentially challenging the longstanding dominance of Microsoft and Google in enterprise software subscriptions.

Although no official release date has been announced, these efforts point to OpenAI’s broader aim to redefine workplace technology as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly central to productivity platforms.
