Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) announced plans to enhance its strategic reserves by holding key cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and BNB. This move aligns with the city’s broader vision of promoting blockchain technology as part of its economic strategy.
Details of Bhutan’s Crypto Strategy
According to the January 8 announcement, the Special Administrative Region (SAR) aims to recognize digital assets as part of its economic resilience plan. Situated in a prime location connecting South Asia’s emerging economies, GMC aims to leverage its position to promote innovation and the use of blockchain technology.
GMC will focus on acquiring digital assets with high market capitalizations and robust liquidity. Additionally, the city plans to monitor stable and secure blockchain projects and implement on-chain transaction tracking to ensure transparency.
Bitcoin Mining and Crypto Reserves Expansion
The move also signals a broader push toward strengthening Bhutan’s Bitcoin mining operations. Recent data shows Bhutan’s government sold millions worth of Bitcoin when the price exceeded $100,000 and still retains holdings valued at $1.11 billion, according to Arkham Intelligence.
Industry Reactions and Future Plans
The crypto community has responded positively to Bhutan’s increased involvement in digital assets. GMC is also working on establishing a legal framework for companies providing digital asset-related financial services. Plans for a global advisory panel and an international summit on crypto adoption further underscore the region’s commitment to this initiative.
Following the announcement, prices of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and BNB saw a slight recovery, rebounding from recent market dips. The BNB Chain team hailed the move as a significant step toward greater blockchain adoption.
